PROGRAMS & SERVICES

One-On-One Tutoring:

Free one-on-one tutoring for English-speaking adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills. Student goals may include employment, further education and increased independence.
Tutoring is provided by trained volunteers and is available weekdays, evenings or weekends.

School Literacy Program (High Schools):

The School Literacy Program is a pull-out program during the school day where literacy challenged grade 7-8 students are tutored on a one-on-one basis. Poor readers are at significant risk for dropping out of high school. By helping them to grow as readers and writers, we hope to motivate these young adolescents to remain in school.

Computer Skills Training:

Computer literacy is fast emerging as a necessary skill in our society. We provide a Computer Skills Training Program as an additional service to adults improving their traditional literacy skills.
Trained volunteers work one-on-one with adults struggling with literacy issues to learn basic computer skills.

Classroom Assistance (Adult Education Centres):

Trained tutors go into adult education classrooms to work with students needing extra support.

Tutor Training Workshops:

A 12-hour basic tutor training is provided to all volunteers who wish to work as a one-on-one tutor.
Also, on-going training and workshops supplement the basic training.

Library & Resource Centre:

An extensive number of resources are available for the use of our tutors and learners including high interest books for beginning readers, books on tape, educational games, and instructional resources for tutors.

Public Scribe Clinics:

A scribe service is available on an as-needed basis for those who need help reading or filling out forms and paperwork.

Family Literacy Day:

Special events are organized in partnership with local community organizations to celebrate Family Literacy Day held on January 27th each year.
