Job Posting: Program Coordinator (Learning for Life)

Who we are:

Literacy Unlimited (“LU”) is a non-profit, volunteer-based, West Island community organization dedicated to empowering adults through improved literacy. For 35 years we have been recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers to tutor adults in reading, writing, numeracy and computer skills. We also provide learner enrichment activities, adult education centre assistance programs, and community outreach and sensitization activities. We strive to empower adults to live more independent and engaged lives by increasing their literacy and reaching their personal, educational or employment goals.

The Position:

Literacy Unlimited is seeking a part-time Program Coordinator for our Learning for Life Project. Reporting to the Executive Director, and working under the Program Director, the Program Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of literacy and essential skills group programs and activities in the community.


0  Coordinate the Learning for Life project:

  • Develop relationships in the community with other non-profit organizations and partners, for the development and execution of community programming and workshops around a variety of literacy topics and essential skills
  • Create, maintain and execute strategies for recruiting learners and volunteers to our core one-on-one literacy programs
  • Recruit, interview, train and supervise volunteer workshop animators
  • Develop, and update as required, group workshop plans and content, in tandem with volunteer workshop animator(s)

o  Organize and attend community events/ outreach activities

o  Develop and implement program evaluation procedures, including methods to evaluate impact

o  Keep accurate program records, files and statistics

o  Develop new programs and activities in accordance with the strategic plan

o  Create program content for the website and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)

o  Contribute to action plans, annual reports and budgets, and grant applications

o  Anything else deemed necessary as designated by the Executive Director


  • Post-secondary degree in education, psychology, community development, or similar field
  • Experience in teaching and/or adult education
  • Experience in adult literacy
  • Experience managing volunteers
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization
  • Ability to work independently and with a team of professionals
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word)
  • Knowledge of the West Island an asset
  • French, spoken and written, is an asset

Additional information:

  • Literacy Unlimited operates from September to June – closed July/August
  • 16 hours/week – some days, but also evening hours required for scheduled workshops and events. The occasional weekend required for special events or training.
  • Start Date: June 4, 2018 for 3 weeks training, official start date September 4, 2018
